Hello, Nelson County Democrats!

It’s only March, but the election season is well underway. In the March 5 presidential primary, President Biden won 88.5 percent of the vote statewide in Virginia – and 93 percent in Nelson County! With overwhelming votes in subsequent primaries, President Biden has more than enough delegates to win renomination and thus is our presumptive presidential nominee.

But March was about more than election politics. President Biden’s State of the Union Address on March 7 made me proud to be a Democrat. Like me, I think so many Americans  came away from it reenergized, inspired, and ready to get to work.

Looking back on these last three years, what I’ve been impressed with has been the president’s absolute commitment to lifting up average Americans, including rebuilding the economy “from the middle out and the bottom up.” And that’s certainly most of us in Nelson County.

From capping insulin at $35 a month for seniors on Medicare to expanding benefits and services to our veterans who’ve been exposed to toxic burn pits, President Biden’s successes in advocating for us are just about unparalleled.

And just last week, he expanded the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program to include 78,000 more eligible public sector workers, including nurses, teachers and firefighters, who have been consistently paying on their loans for 10 years. Why? He’s fixing “broken” student loan programs to “make sure higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity.”
