Hello Nelson Democrats,

Since I’m writing this on Friday morning but you won’t see it until Monday, the numbers will already be a little outdated, however as of right now just under 2,400 votes have been cast in person early and 1,000 envelopes containing absentee ballots have been received. There are still approximately 400 absentee ballots which have been sent out and not returned, so if you know anyone who might still be holding one, please remind them that the ballot they have received is their personal, official ballot. If the possessor of that ballot chooses to vote in person, they must bring that ballot with them or they will be forced to vote using a provisional ballot.

Many of you reading this have volunteered to be outside poll watchers on Election Day. Thank you so much. With the tension surrounding this election, and the call by 45 urging his supporters to come to the polls and “watch,” poll watching takes on a different feel this year. I remember well the extreme tension in 2016 during my hours at Faber, and I expect it to be worse this year. I want to urge everyone to be alert, but not confrontational.  All volunteers should have a phone with them. Each site will have a paper with a list of phone numbers our volunteers can call if they are witnessing behaviors they consider wrong, and the list will start with the sheriff’s office.  Sheriff David Hill has been alerted to our concerns by many calls, and he has heard us. Also, if you witness behavior you consider intimidation, pull out the phone and start filming. 

One thing that’s especially important to know is that Virginia is an open carry state, so individuals may carry firearms in with them when they vote (I know, I can’t believe it either, but it’s true), as well as when they congregate afterwards. Also remember that a very large percentage of Democrats will have voted early, so it may feel a little lonely and depressing at the polls. 

Finally, I want to again express my gratitude to everyone who has volunteered and worked in what has undoubtedly been the weirdest and most tension-filled election ever.  I know we all have been scared by 2016 and the ensuing 4 years of depressing insanity, but I want to urge everyone to remain optimistic. The failure, chaos, and corruption that has surrounded 45 these years is coming to an end. I’m just so sorry we can’t gather together on election night to hold each other through the process.  Say an extra prayer for Dr. Cameron Webb. I believe if we can push him over the finish line we will be launching a long national career.
